calendar_today 08 December 2020

10,000 people aged 15-79 years old from the entire country were interviewed on demographic changes and trends that occurred in the country.

This survey, which is the most comprehensive demographic survey at global level, represents a tool for people’s engagement in the identification of necessary policy measures to address demographic challenges of the Republic of Moldova. The survey collected information about family life, gender equality, relationships between partners, the desired number of children, family planning, intergenerational dialogue, work-life balance, intention to emigrate, social and economic wellbeing etc.

The Generations and Gender Survey (GGS) has been conducted before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and provides a complex analysis of the impact of the pandemic on demographic behaviors, including how family relationships, income and access to medical and basic services were affected.

The survey results will be used for development of evidence-based and human rights demographic policies in the country. Due to the fact that GGS is a longitudinal survey conducted every 3 years for a period of 9 years on the same group of people, the Moldovan Government can monitor the efficiency of demographic policies and can identify necessary measures in response to ageing population, low fertility, migration and low life expectance, especially among men.

According to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the key partner in conducting this study, SGG is more than a statistical database of various demographic phenomena, being more about people's lives, their health and well-being.

“When collected and analyzed well, data can advance sustainable development, identifying those most at risk. The results of this survey will be used for monitoring the nationalized indicators of Sustainable Development Goals and in development of a series of evidence-based population policies, with the aim to ensure demographic resilience and leave no one behind", said Nigina Abaszada, Rezident Representative UNFPA Moldova.

Nelea Rusu, State Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection (MHLSP), mentioned that: “The Generations and Gender Survey in Moldova is important for providing robust data that will contribute significantly to the identification of policy priorities and measures needed to improve the demographic situation in the country”.

Generations and Gender is a global survey, which has already been conducted in 24 countries, every three years for a period of nine years. In 2020, started a new round of planning and implementation of data collection in Norway, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Sweden, along with Hong Kong, France and Estonia that are about to start pilot fieldwork.

In the Republic of Moldova, the Generations and Gender Programme is coordinated by the UN Population Fund in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection, the National Bureau of Statistics and the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute, being financially supported by the MSMPS, the India-UN Development Partnership Fund and UNFPA Moldova.
