Chisinau - UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund in the Republic of Moldova, in partnership with the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the Ministry of Labour, Social Protection and Family of the Republic of Moldova, organised a Workshop on the analysis Mainstreaming Ageing into Sectorial Policies Methodology on September 17.
Moldova reached the critical aging coefficient (the number of people over 60 per 100 citizens) in 1998. If the trends are maintained, the elderly population will constitute about 33% of the total country population by 2050.
The UNFPA Representative in Moldova Ian McFarlane underlined that aging couldn’t be considered an area under the umbrella of social protection and pension system anymore, and a proactive approach had to be adopted according to which aging became everyone's responsibility. "The methodology proposed aims to ensure that the interests and needs of elderly are taken into account in the framework of the development of public policies", said Mr.Mcfarlane.
Deputy Minister of Labour, Social Protection and Family Boris Gilca said that, given the current demographic trends and dynamics, aging would have an important place in policymaking in Moldova.
The Mainstreaming Ageing into Sectorial Policies Methodology will be the main instrument for the implementation of the Roadmap in the field of aging and 2014 - 2016 Action Plan and will ensure the correlation of population dynamics to the macroeconomic trends in Moldova September. As a decision-making tool, the methodology is intended makers political, NGO activists, project managers, and local decision makers.
