UNFPA supports the modernization of the Medical Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova so that its employees can enjoy improved medical services, according to international standards.

During an official ceremony attended by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Adrian Efros, and Dr. Karina Nersesyan, the Resident Representative of UNFPA in the Republic of Moldova, the Medical Service team of the Ministry of Internal Affairs received today a donation of equipment worth a total of almost 2.5 million lei. This includes medical equipment and furniture for the gynecological examination units, the operating theater and the intensive care unit.

In his speech, Adrian Efros, Minister of Internal Affairs, said: "The equipment provided allows us to improve our services and respond efficiently to urgent needs, thus contributing to the creation of a more resilient and inclusive health system. We assure you that we will use these resources with maximum responsibility to provide high quality services to all who need them".

With over 16,000 employees working within the Ministry of Internal Affairs and affiliated institutions, almost one in five employees is a woman, and access to sexual and reproductive health services for them is a common priority.

"UNFPA, together with the US Government, supports the modernization of the Medical Service of the Ministry of Interior, so that the employees of the internal affairs system can enjoy improved medical services, according to international standards. Likewise, UNFPA maintains its commitment to work closely with the Ministry of Internal Affairs to support reforms that move Moldova closer to the European Union, including in the field of preventing and combating gender-based violence", said Dr. Karina Nersesyan, UNFPA Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova.

UNFPA, with the financial support of the US Government, equipped the gynecological examination units, the operating theater and the intensive care unit of the Medical Service of the Ministry of Interior with modern medical equipment, furniture and supplies.

UNFPA also provided gynecological equipment and kits to the Family Justice Center of the General Police Inspectorate, which serves as a one-stop center for victims of violence. UNFPA also supports psychological and social support services for survivors of violence at this center as part of the commitment to strengthen national GBV-based response services.

These investments are aimed at strengthening the capacities of the Ministry's Medical Service to provide high-quality gynecological and obstetrical healthcare for women employed in MAI and related structures, including administration, students, trainees and pensioners, and refugees from Ukraine.

The contribution is part of a wider package of assistance and investment that UNFPA has provided since the beginning of the humanitarian crisis in Moldova, addressing the needs of both the local population and the refugee population. At the same time, these support actions are part of the Memorandum of Understanding for the years 2023-2027, signed by UNFPA and the Ministry of Internal Affairs last year.
