Violence against women and girls is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in Moldova. 63% of women in Moldova experienced a particular type of violence (psychological, physical or sexual) from their husband / partner in their lifetime. At the same time, only 8.4% of abused women reported the case to the police.
Gender-based violence undermines the health, dignity, security and autonomy of its victims. Victims of violence can suffer sexual and reproductive health consequences, including forced and unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, traumatic fistula, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, and even death.
UNFPA Moldova contributes to strengthening national capacity to integrate sexual and reproductive services and rights into the health response to gender based violence in the health system, as well as in shelters to assist survivors. Women’s rights are supported through police and health care training to prevent and respond to gender based violence. UNFPA is supporting the development of the National Strategy on Gender Equality 2020 and first Strategy on Violence against Women in Moldova. As a result of UNFPA interventions, the number of reported to police cases of violence against women significantly increased. UNFPA Moldova promotes the right of all women and girls to live free of violence and abuse.
