Cervical cancer occurs when cells of the cervix are infected with one or more high-risk HPV types which cause them to become abnormal and slowly develop into a cancer. Cervical screening is used to find these abnormal cervical cells while they are at an early pre-cancer stage when they can be easily removed so that they do not develop into a cancer.
