„For UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, the World Contraception Day is one of the most important events of the year. We work to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted and every childbirth is safe, therefore family planning is at the core of our mandate.

Contraception is not about pills, condoms, or fertility control. Contraception is about planning your future. It should not be about stigma, taboo, or shame. Family planning and access to contraception is indeed about freedom of choice, body autonomy and human rights.

Imagine a girl, who gets pregnant at the age of 16, drops her education for that reason and all her future is devastated. Every year, two thousands of girls in Moldova find themselves in similar situations, because they still lack full knowledge and access to information on contraception, prevention of sexual violence and access to youth friendly services.

And then, imagine a couple who is trying to conceive, while suffering from infertility. Shouldn’t they get full access to professional family planning counseling, in order to help them so their dream becomes true?

Due to family planning, a woman who is at the peak of her career can plan her pregnancy in advance, so it’s at the right moment of her life. She gains not only in the terms of autonomy, but also, she advances in health and education, income and safety both for her, her children and family overall.

On World Contraception Day, we should take action to ensure that every woman and man, every young person has the power to make independent choices for the best of their future and ensure quality family planning services for all”.
