Four women-led organizations will each receive a grant of 92,000 MDL to develop community initiatives for the prevention of gender-based violence (GBV).

Today marked the official launch of four projects aimed at supporting women in combating gender-based violence (GBV) and transforming communities through local initiatives. This initiative is implemented by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with Gender-Centru and the National Platform for Gender Equality, with financial support from the United Kingdom.

Thanks to the grant, the Rehabilitation Center for Torture Victims "Memoria" will implement a project that will facilitate integration and provide psychosocial support for 50 refugee women and survivors of violence.

The opening of the event was marked by the speech of Natalia Plugaru, Deputy Representative of UNFPA Moldova, who emphasized the importance of supporting these initiatives.

"Through these small grants, we see a significant impact in the communities where you work. Your activities give women courage and confidence, helping them overcome violence and succeed in life. The mutual support among women and the assistance you provide represent the greatest impact of these initiatives," she stated.

The projects launched today are particularly important as they involve both refugees from Ukraine and members of the local community. This approach is essential for fostering mutual support and addressing the unique challenges these groups face, thereby contributing to their resilience and integration.

A key moment of the event was the speech by Pippa Bown, Humanitarian Adviser at the British Embassy in Moldova. She highlighted the crucial role that education and community support play in preventing gender-based violence.

GBV

"Gender-based violence is a complex issue that requires solutions tailored to each community. That is why it is essential to work with local organizations that have the trust and support of the people they represent. We are proud to contribute to these programs, which not only promote women's safety but also uphold their fundamental rights."

The projects will be implemented between February and May 2025. According to Valentina Bodrug, President of Gender-Centru, these initiatives will bring real change by providing support to survivors of violence and promoting effective public policies.

GBV

"Investing in organizations and communities, even with limited resources, has a major impact on society as a whole. Security is the foundation of development, and a violence-free community creates a safe space for the entire country."

A concrete example of how these grants transform lives was provided by the "Baștina Frășinești" Association, which supports women in rural areas, helping them find their voice and regain their confidence.

"We are truly delighted to see women smiling and to receive positive feedback from the communities. We succeed in promoting activism, building their self-confidence, and giving them a voice. When they learn to share their stories, they become more confident and better prepared to combat gender-based violence," said Aliona Manciu, the organization's director.

The four launched projects:

"Feminine Balance", implemented by the "Baștina Frășinești" Association, targets 60 women and girls from four communities in the Ungheni district. The activities include personal development sessions, work-life balance training, and cultural events that recognize women's contributions to art.

"Feminine Empowerment: Combating Gender Stereotypes through Knowledge", carried out by the Women’s Political Club 50/50, aims to reach 75 women from Moldova and refugees from Ukraine, providing them with informational sessions to combat gender stereotypes and promote equal rights.

"He and She – Different, but Equal in Rights", implemented by the "Honor and Rights of the Contemporary Woman" Association, aims to increase the resilience of women and girls in northern Moldova through training, legal and economic counseling, psychological support, and activities to assist survivors of GBV.

"Group Interventions Adapted for Women with War Experiences and GBV Survivors from the Community", a project carried out by the Rehabilitation Center for Torture Victims "Memoria," aims to provide integration and psychosocial support for 50 refugee women and survivors of violence.
