Laurențiu Pintea, an 18-year-old from Zăicani, Râșcani district, works as an administrative assistant at the Phoenix Center. He considers himself fortunate because, despite living with a disability, his parents have always supported him and engaged in open discussions on various topics, including the most sensitive ones.
"In our family, we have no taboo topics. From my parents, I learned about the changes in the adolescent body during puberty, sexually transmitted diseases and contraception, relationships, marriage, friendship, and children."
Laurențiu and his mother participated in networking activities organized by the MOTIVAȚIE Association for adolescents and young people attending the Phoenix Center and their parents. These activities facilitated discussions on family dialogue, intergenerational conflicts, HIV, AIDS, love, and friendship.
"During these activities, we tackled rarely discussed topics in families with adolescents with disabilities. Many parents believe discussing subjects like relationships is unnecessary, assuming these adolescents do not need such information or will not understand it. However, these young people inevitably find answers to their questions, as the internet is easily accessible. Parents should provide age-appropriate information and address their children's questions," Laurențiu observed.
He speaks openly with his parents about all topics, including sensitive ones. "We discussed the changes in the adolescent body during puberty, romantic relationships, sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, friendships, and children. My parents' open approach greatly helped me find meaning in life after completing my studies and taking responsibility for my decisions and life. It is important for young people with disabilities to speak openly with their parents about their needs and for parents to support and trust their children," he added.
The networking activities for parents and adolescents allow families to strengthen their connections. They create a safe space to address sensitive topics and serve as an exercise for open discussions that families can continue at home.
Laurențiu participated with his mother and shared that the experience benefited both. "I feel more confident in my abilities and more motivated to move forward, no matter the challenges I may face, especially when I decide to build my own family," he said.
The MOTIVAȚIE Association organizes Networking Activities for Parents and Adolescents with Disabilities under the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Global program for comprehensive education on adolescent and youth reproductive health, implemented with financial support from the Government of Norway.
