In the Republic of Moldova, the average life expectancy is increasing and by 2040, every third person in the country will be over 60. Based on this trend, the first Action Platform in Support of Active Ageing and Digital Inclusion of Older People in the Republic of Moldova was officially launched today. The event was organized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Moldova, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) and the Moldcell Foundation, with financial support from the Czech Development Agency. Attendees included representatives from central and local public authorities, diplomatic missions, development partners, private sector, academia, NGOs, and members of the Active Aging’ Club from Ungheni Municipality.
This initiative aligns with the National Active Aging Program (2023-2027), which aims to provide 25,000 older people with mobile phones and training on how to use them. This will facilitate their access to online public services and encourage active participation in the community and the country’s socio-economic life.
During the opening remarks, Alexei Buzu, Minister of Labor and Social Protection, emphasized the importance of ongoing investments in digitalization and empowerment of elderly people in Moldova: "The transition to the digital world must be inclusive and bring benefits to all citizens, regardless of age. The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection is keeping pace with the country's digitalization. However, we face three major barriers: lack of digital skills, limited access to data and equipment, and incomplete access overall. We need to overcome these challenges with concrete and effective initiatives. Through this platform, we aim to provide the elderly with the tools and knowledge they need to access online public services, simplify their daily lives, and remain connected to the world. Our first step is to equip 25,000 seniors with digital skills and devices by 2027, and we need your support to achieve this goal."
UNFPA Moldova, a longstanding advocate for older people rights and societal participation, played a key role in this effort. Karina Nersesyan, UNFPA Moldova Representative, highlighted that population aging reflects humanity's progress, enabling people to live longer with better healthcare and social services. She noted: "Digitalization in Moldova is a reality, and our responsibility is to ensure no older people is left behind. What began as a pilot initiative has evolved into a sustained effort promoting digital inclusion and active aging. Over the years, UNFPA Moldova has supported innovative projects such as the University of the Third Age, Active Aging Clubs, and digital literacy programs. These initiatives have provided seniors with essential digital skills, access to modern resources, and opportunities for socialization and active participation. To date, over 2,000 seniors have benefited from these programs, showcasing the commitment of all partners in transforming aging into an opportunity and fostering a future where seniors are valued and connected.”
Irina Străjescu, Executive Director of the Moldcell Foundation, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to empowering seniors through technology and digital training: "At Moldcell Foundation, we understand the importance of giving older people access to technology and digital education. We continue to develop digital literacy programs for seniors, bridging generations and fostering a more inclusive and connected society. Our project, 'Digital Skills Connect Generations,' demonstrates that collaboration and innovation can help seniors embrace life to the fullest by connecting them to digital opportunities. Volunteers, particularly young people, play a key role in mentoring seniors on using devices and navigating the digital space. It is crucial for us that older people remain connected, access social services, and stay active throughout their lives."
Natalia Codreanu, Chairperson of the FinComBank Management Committee, announced the bank's support for inclusion initiatives of the older people: "At FinComBank, we are committed to financial education, especially through campaigns like #Cashless, which aims to inform the public, including seniors, about the benefits of digital payments. We are proud to join this vital project, investing in digital banking products that are simple, intuitive, and accessible to all, including seniors. Ensuring a secure digital environment and preventing banking fraud are also essential in providing seniors with a trustworthy platform for using online services."
The event concluded with an emotional musical performance by seniors from the Ungheni region in collaboration with the Youth Orchestra, underscoring the power of intergenerational connection and the importance of investing in active aging.
The newly launched platform aims to support active and healthy aging for people of all ages, especially by developing digital skills and creating a supportive environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle, lifelong learning, and inclusion through intergenerational dialogue with youth. Through these actions, Moldova aspires to become a regional example of digital inclusion and active, healthy aging, helping seniors remain active, connected, and contributors to the country’s socio-economic and demographic resilience.
