Considering the ongoing public reflections vis-a-vis the information campaign ‘Plan your life. Choose your method of contraception’, UNFPA, the United Nations Reproductive Health and Rights Agency, would like to underline the following:

  • Access to family planning and therefore to different methods of contraception, is a human right. All men and women have the right to be informed and to have access to safe, effective, affordable and acceptable method of family planning of their choice regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability or any other criteria. This includes the right to know about pros and cons of each and every method of family planning in order to make an informed choice and a free decision.
  • The information Campaign “Plan your life. Choose your method of contraception” has been designed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, reproductive health experts, the online platform Suntparinte.md and other partners. The main objective of the campaign is to inform the population about different types of modern methods of contraception, including vasectomy. Each method has been given equal value and each method is explained from the perspective of advantages, efficiency, eligibility criteria, medical implications and possible side effects.  None of the family planning methods is specifically promoted, advocated for or recommended for use.
  • It is important to highlight that family planning empowers women and couples to determine freely and responsibly their reproductive intentions related to the number and spacing of pregnancies in order to maintaining good health, completing education, accessing employment opportunities, or advancing career goals which ultimately leads to increased earning power and better access to desired jobs and social benefits.
  • Increased access to family planning information and services over the last decades has resulted in a significant decrease in maternal deaths and complications of pregnancies.
  •  UNFPA supports countries across the world and in the Republic of Moldova to make family planning services accessible and available, including access to accurate information for both public and medical community.
  • This contributes to achieving the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development Goals unanimously adopted in 2015 by 193 Member States, including Moldova.
  • Expanding access to contraception and ensuring that demand for family planning is satisfied using effective contraceptive methods are essential for achieving universal access to reproductive health-care services, as per the Sustainable Development Goal 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages and SDG 5 on Gender equality.
  • Target 3.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) calls on countries “by 2030, to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including for family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programmes”.
  • UNFPA commends the efforts of the Republic of Moldova in advancing the sexual and reproductive health and rights, and is fully committed to support countries’ efforts to uphold the right of individuals and couples, especially women, to plan a family. We are striving to end all unmet need for voluntary family planning by 2030, and to realize the Sustainable Development Goals.
