More than 100 students from the second cohort of the Third Age University (U3A) in Chișinău can now enjoy greater comfort and freedom in learning digital skills—thanks to a newly designed space created especially for them. On 19 February, at the State University of Moldova (USM), was launched the Digital Corner - a place where senior students can learn, socialize and explore the endless possibilities of the digital world and beyond.
The project was implemented by UNFPA Moldova, with support from the Czech Development Agency, and in partnership with USM and the Moldcell Foundation. This initiative is part of the Active Aging Program, supported by UNFPA and implemented by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection. The launch event gathered dozens of senior students from UV3, who discovered the benefits and opportunities offered by the Digital Corner.
The new area, designed for relaxation and connection, provides access to modern technologies, promoting digital inclusion for older persons.
Otilia Dandara, USM’s First Vice-Rector, emphasized the significance of the initiative:
"Today, technology is no longer a privilege but a necessity. Through the launch of the Digital Corner, Moldova State University reaffirms its commitment to creating equal opportunities for all students, including those at the Third Age University. We are proud to host this initiative, which will allow older persons to explore the digital world, learn, and stay connected in a constantly evolving society."
Natalia Plugaru, Deputy Representative of UNFPA Moldova, highlighted the role of digital inclusion: "UNFPA Moldova believes in the right of every individual to actively participate in society, regardless of age. This digital space is more than just a location—it is a gateway to new opportunities. In an increasingly digitalized world, this project provides older persons with the tools and knowledge they need to stay connected, to learn, and to actively contribute to their communities."
Irina Strajescu, Director of the Moldcell Foundation, added: "At the Moldcell Foundation, we are excited to continue our digital inclusion project for seniors through the launch of this Digital Corner. It was created in response to a real need, and everything that emerges from such a necessity has a great chance of becoming a success story."
The Digital Space provides seniors with access to modern equipment, tailored training sessions, and a diverse library of relevant materials. This initiative offers them the opportunity to develop essential digital skills and become part of an active and supportive community.
The seniors attending the event expressed their excitement and gratitude for this innovative project.
Ilie Feodor, a pensioner and U3A student, shared: "For many of us, retirement comes with a sense of isolation. The Third Age University and initiatives like this Digital Space offer us a second chance at life. They provide opportunities to learn, socialize, and stay active."
Maria Băgu, a pensioner and U3A student, added: "You know, our children are not always around, and when we have a problem or don’t know something, technology helps us. Here, we stay informed, develop ourselves, and spend time socializing, which is extremely important at our age. This space is a blessing."
The creation of the Digital Space was made possible through the collaboration of UNFPA Moldova, the Moldcell Foundation, Moldova State University, and the Czech Development Agency. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to building an inclusive, connected, and resilient society for all generations.
