An unique flash mob in the center of the capital, on the day when the world's population reaches 8 billion. Over 100 people from all layers of population will come together to promote the endless possibilities that each person can create in a world of 8 billion people. The event with the title ‘I am 1 of 8 billion in a world of infinite possibilities’ is organised by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) on Tuesday, 5 November 2022, at 2:00 p.m., in the square of Maria Bieșu Opera and Ballet Theatre.

The flash mob will be attended by young people, the elderly, mothers and fathers, pregnant women, people with disabilities, refugees, as well as UNFPA representatives. Flashmob participants will form the number 8 for a few seconds, and then move sideways, forming a symbol (∞).

When rotated horizontally, the number 8 becomes the symbol of infinity (∞) - 8 billion people on the planet actually means a world of limitless possibilities for each person who can make an individual contribution to a prosperous society. A world where every person, regardless of place of residence, age, religion, gender or health status, has the same rights and opportunities.

Collectively, we represent infinite possibilities for action, growth and change. As eight billion, we have the power to alter the trajectory of the planet. By protecting individual rights, we can harness the unlimited potential of people all over the world. We can contribute to a better world by: adopting a healthier lifestyle, caring for the environment, promoting equality in the family, active ageing, participating in community life, volunteering, reporting incidents of violence, etc.

At the same time, this stage, which affects the population of the entire globe and of which each of us is a part, is an opportunity to reflect on the key demographic trends taking place in the Republic of Moldova - fertility, life expectancy, migration, population ageing, etc.

Also on this day, UNFPA will launch a symbolic installation #1in8Billions - an action with which we want to say that every person, regardless of where they live, age, religion, gender or health status, has the same rights and opportunities.

NOTE: Representatives of the media are expected to be present at the site for press statements from participants representing various categories of the population and UNFPA members.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the lead UN agency in the region supporting countries to consolidate their demographic resilience and maximize the opportunities presented by demographic change. The moment when the population reaches 8 billion highlights the persistent inequalities and the need to focus on social inclusion as a key strategy to increase the demographic resilience of the Republic of Moldova: empowering women, social inclusion of older people, creating opportunities for youth, refugees and migrants, etc.

Numbers matter. But more important than numbers are people. When people are healthy, educated and empowered, societies prosper, regardless of their numbers.

It should be noted that as part of the campaign dedicated to 8 billion people on the planet, along with the organisation of a flash mob with the participation of the mass-media, UNFPA in Moldova also holds other actions aimed at raising public awareness regarding demographic changes.
