The United Nations Population Fund promotes sexual and reproductive health and rights, and works to create a world where every pregnancy is wanted and every birth is safe. UNFPA stands alongside the national health system of the Republic of Moldova to achieve new milestones in maternal health, ensuring safe births and fostering positive birth experiences rooted in respect for human dignity.

In alignment with its mission, UNFPA recently participated in the Birth March, a public event held at the Botanical Garden. This event served as a platform to engage with initiatives focused on positive pregnancy and safe chidbirth guided by fundamental human rights principles and tailored to meet the needs of women and newborns.

The event gathered more that 200 of parents with children, pregnant women and expectant fathers, eager to learn more about the pregnancy process, birth and newborn care. Here, future parents could participate in thematic seminars, share their experiences and interact with other participants. And younger visitors explored innovation at the robotics workshop and tested their culinary skills.

Modernization of equipment for safe births

Together with its partners, UNFPA demonstrates its firm commitment to support the efforts of the Ministry of Health to strengthen the capacity of the perinatal service in the Republic of Moldova by equipping delivery rooms, operating rooms and intensive care units with high-performance medical equipment, as well as to strengthen the capacities medical staff on the clinical management of obstetric emergencies, quality human rights-based intranatal care for a positive birth experience.

"UNFPA continues to undertake complex actions to support the health system in the Republic of Moldova and to promote safe births, so that every mother and every newborn receives the care they need to start life safely and confidently" , mentions Natalia Plugaru, UNFPA Deputy Representative.

With state-of-the-art equipment provided by UNFPA, the delivery rooms, operating rooms and intensive care units of the perinatal centers are equipped to provide the highest standards of health care for mothers and newborns in the Republic of Moldova, as well as to the refugees from Ukraine. Thus, more than 20,000 safe births are assisted annually in hospitals supported by UNFPA.
